Female superhero Chinese Redbud Woman appears in Beijing
This May, a female “superhero” appeared in Hong Kong, wearing low-cut black tights and blue mask, called herself “Zijing Woman” (紫荆侠) or “Chinese Redbud Woman”. She handed out food and cash to some Hong Kong residents. The mysterious masked female vigilante received great attention in Hong Kong.
However, on December 24, a “female superhero” also appeared in Beijing, wearing exactly the same outfit as the “Chinese Redbud Woman” of Hong Kong.
“Today is my first day as the Chinese Redbud Woman, feeling a little nervous. Already prepared the military coats and food for the elderlies, also many thanks to the hand warner friend gave me.” She called herself Chinese Redbud Woman in her microblog, mysteriously appeared on the cold streets of Beijing on Christmas Eve, in front of the Wangfujing Bookstore, at the Xidan subway station and other places, distributed clothing and gifts to beggars and homeless. Beijing residents and netizens also started to talk about her.
Colorado journalist and romance author Pamela Clare, a longtime reporter on women’s prison issues, weaves real-life cases into her novels—for example, the horrifying (and commonplace) procedure of shackling pregnant inmates when they’re giving birth. In her book Unlawful Contact, the senator hero gets a bill passed banning the practice. Unsatisfied with mere fiction, Clare consulted with lawmakers and actually wrote such a bill, which was passed last year.
Now who says romance is “fluff”, again?

King and Dufferin, Toronto. My neighbourhood! No, don’t go to the McDonald’s. Turn right, cross the street, and go to Island Foods, source of the best roti in the city*. If you’re lucky, they’ll still have doubles, too.
__
* Maybe you prefer Ali’s, Bacchus, or Mother India**? That’s okay, they’re all in the neighbourhood.
** East Indian food, like mutter paneer and chicken jalfrezi, but wrapped up in a roti, Caribbean-style. We’ve come full circle!
Oh my god! Look at all the things I love in this photo!
- The grey H&M shirt pinebark also has
- My cat with a wonderfully sarcastic expression

An old friend of mine was back in town and I took her to Bakka-Phoenix’s new location. We were both looking specifically for books that turned out to be out of print or effectively so, but it’s pretty difficult to come away disappointed from Bakka—she was tempted but didn’t buy anything because she’d have to lug it back overseas, but I treated myself to this. We ambled down Spadina and then got bubble tea in Chinatown* and had brainy and emotional conversation about family history and assimilation and Canada’s history of colonialism and what not…and then talked about funny history things. What I like about my university friends is that we can gossip about things that happened 400 years ago like it’s scandalous tabloid goings-on.
Now thinking about “authenticity”, assimilation and syncretism, preservation of culture, religious people with ulterior motives…and how to possibly work it into a short alt-history story. Might need to have the Ming Dynasty collapse about forty years early. Definitely have to take a trip to the Reference Library.

* It’s a nice little place with a lot more food variety than the average bbt shop, especially in the dessert department. Lots of comfort-food stuff, puddings and jellies and sweet soups.
