but I am tired, bone-dead tired, of choking on my anger at systemic, structural injustices to appease insecure white men who are really trying.

my heart just stopped. i just read on a feminist site a (presumably) feminist say “What’s the point of feminism if feminists don’t believe people can change?”—and this was said about a man who attempted to murder a woman, who has abused women, who has slept with women students, on and on and on and on….

What’s the point of feminism if feminists don’t believe men who try to murder women people can change?

i feel as if i should go out into baby sugg’s field and apologize to all the women who have fought and died for gender justice.

And this is the shit that Canadians refuse to recognize in the present world. It’s funny because Canadians like to pat themselves on the back for being such peacemakers and good to people when this abuse has been going on for about a century. The last residential school closed at 1997, that was only about thirteen years ago.

I’m Canadian, and from what I’ve seen, Canadians generally know about the residential schools, but the average person doesn’t realise how bad it was, and they definitely don’t think of it being recent. Our education system has some serious holes when it comes to Aboriginal history.

every time residential schools get mentioned I want to fucking bawl. also, holy shit my grandfather and other elders went to the one in spanish too. 

my grandmother never ever spoke about what happened to her in residential school when she was alive, not even to my mom, not even before she died. my uncle has told some pretty awful stories though.

I did a school project on residential schools for the Heritage Fair and you would not believe the sheer amount of people who went “??????” at my board. It was fucking shameful. I went home so angry that so many people - in an institution of learning - could be that ignorant about such a thing. But I guess they learned? kind of?

I also got a lot of shit about how I was lying about my heritage, but whatever.

I only learned about the residential schools (and local native history in general) because a parent had a job on the reserve near the small town we moved to when I was 10 or so, and got to know the community. Once when we had to do speeches (do kids still have to do speech competitions?) I decided to do one on the residential schools.

Idealistic Kid WUH: This thoroughly researched speech which covers like 300 years of history will appeal to both the emotions and the intellect of my audience and bring to light this important historical issue which has been unaccountably ignored in our education!
Audience of white people: *crickets*
