Sf idol Heinlein (1907-1988) airs racist libertarian views in this mid-60's correspondence »

A very nice edition of Robert A. Heinlein’s complete works and correspondence is being put out, and the publisher has made a sampler available, featuring among other things this long nasty screed defending restrictive covenants, educational segregation, white hotel owners’ rights to turn black travellers away, etc. It is a libertarian argument, but (as you can see from Lavie Tidhar’s excerpts) founded in his strong belief in the inferiority of black people.

The editors point out that this gives some background to Farnham’s Freehold, the 1964 novel that is arguably his worst work, about a contemporary white family catapulted into a nightmarish future where—you’ll never guess—black people are in charge and white people are slaves.

They also imply that it has since become socially unacceptable to air such views in public loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
